Hiking - The GR
Hiking in Ardèche in a few figures is6,000 km of trails including 600 km of hiking trails (Grande Randonnée), 750 km of country hiking trails (GR de Pays) and more than 4,500 km
of footpaths.
The hiking trails 'GR' are marked trails of white and red horizontal lines connecting many French regions altogether. The 'GR' in Ardèche allow you to cross the whole county. A few 'GR' are detailed in hiking guides on sale in bookshops
or tourist offices.
The GR.
# GR 4 (Mediterranea to the ocean)
Starting from River Rhône in Pont-Saint-Esprit and heading to the Auvergne mountains. From Pont-Saint-Esprit to Les Vans, following the Ardèche and the Chassezac rivers, crossing a Mediterranean landscape. From Les Vans to Bez, the trail climbs in the Cevennes massif. From Bez to Langogne the landscape is made of mountains, meadows and forests.
# GR 4 B
A different version of the GR4 from Labastide de Virac (
), allowing to reach the “Aven de la Forestière” (
) and the “Aven d’Orgnac”.
# GR 4 F
It joins the GR 42 from Bourg-Saint-Andéol (
) to the GR 4 in Salavas (
) crossing Saint- Remèze (
).
# GR 44
It links Villefort, from Mount-Lozère, to Les Vans by “le Serre de Barre”, a ridge overlooking the Cevennes and the southern Ardèche plains.
# GR 44 A
It links Les Vans to Bessèges. There, it joins the GR44 in Malons and carries on the Pendedis pass where it joins the GR 67.
# GR 7 and its different versions (trail Vosges - Pyrenees)
It follows the watershed line crossing the Haut-Vivarais and the Ardèche mountains, from the Saint-Agrève region to Labastide, at the Lozere borders. It allows to discover Lake Devesset (
), Saint-Agrève, The Mont-Mézenc, The Mont Gerbier de Jonc, Mazan Abbey (
) and its forest, Saint-Laurent-les-Bains (
), the Trapist monastery of ‘Notre-Dame des Neiges”.
# GR 42
Leaving from the Pilat massif, crossing the Haut-Vivarais mountains passing through Satillieu (
), Étables (
), Plats (
). From Saint-Péray (
) to Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche, it dominates the Rhône Valley following a ridge. Variations allow to reach the Rhône Valley main cities: Tournon, Saint-Péray (
), Guilherand-Granges (
), Le Pouzin (
), Cruas (
), Viviers, Bourg-Saint-Andéol.
# GR 427(Trail of the Eyrieux valley crest)
It links the GR 73 (variant of the GR 7) to the GR 42. From Sagnes-et-Goudoulet in the Ardèche mountains, it descends through the Boutières area to reach Le Cheylard (
), dominating the Eyrieux fruit valley from its creast, then joining the Rhône in Saint-Laurent-du-Pape (
).
# GR 420 (trail of the Haut-Vivarais tour)
It allows, in about ten days, to tour the Haut-Vivarais. It uses part of the existing GR as the GR 7 and its variants, the GR 42 and the GR 427 and 421.
# GR 420 A
It links Saint- Agrève to Le Cheylard (
).
# GR 421
It joins the GR 42 to the GR 7, from Satillieu (
) to Saint-Bonnet-le-Froid crossing Lalouvesc.
# GR 430
"St. John Francis Regis’way ", between Ardèche and Haute-Loire, in the heart of the northern Vivarais. It uses the GR7 from Mars (
) to Devesset (
) passing through Saint- Agrève then joining Lalouvesc crossing Rochepaule (
). It leaves in Haute-Loire from Saint-Pierre-sur-Doux (
).
# GR 3(from the sources of the Loire to its mouth)
It starts from the Gerbier-de-Jonc, goes to Issarlès lake before crossing Haute-Loire.
