Boucieu-le-Roi
A royal destiny.
Situated between Tournon-sur-Rhône (
) and Lamastre (
), Boucieu-le-Roi is one of the gems of the Doux Valley and the northern Ardèche (Ardèche Verte
, with numerous vestiges of its glorious past still remaining. This highly favoured village gained its royal patronymic in 1291 under Philippe le Bel who set up a court of justice here. A number of magnificent houses such as that of the “bailli”(
)- the king’s agent who administered justice - with its corbelled turret, overlook the former Gallo-Roman road and the valley, which is spanned by a mediaeval bridge (
). The church (
) construction of which began in 1492, is flanked on either side by a chapel. Its granite façades are discreetly ornamented with ogee lintels, capitals, columns, coats-of-arts, crosses, sculpted heads, a flower, star and sun. Visitors who discover Boucieu-le-Roi today fall under the same spell as the missionary priest, Pierre Vigne, who came here in the eighteenth century and was struck by its resemblance to Jerusalem
